Men with Depression and Anxiety

Men with depression and anxiety is now reaching an epidemic crisis, and these are the

hardest conditions to diagnose.

While searching around on the net for content for this particular category, men with depression, men who suffer from anxiety and men who have panic attacks, I was having a bit of a dilemma as there was not enough material available for me to have a fully honest opinion about this particular topic. With this in mind I ended up having a chat with a friend of mine who is a psychologist. He then filled in all the blanks for me.

So today I hope that the following information is helpful to someone out there who suffers from these debilitating illnesses and I hope my efforts have not been in vain. The following is mainly my own opinion of my findings and research.

If anyone has anything else that they may like to add in regard to this category please feel free to add to the comments or email me via the contact us section! I would be grateful for some first hand honest comments so I can add them to this blog. It seems in this day and age that one of the most difficult diagnoses of men with depression and anxiety disorder is getting it diagnosed because they tend to keep the illness a secret, which means on the surface of it all, it also appears that more women have these disorders. (Because they are more willing to go and seek help or at least see a doctor to find out what the problem is.) Well I have news for everyone out there.

This is not the case! My findings from research on the internet and asking people in general (men and women) straight and gay, couples and singles and also chatting with a General Practitioner and a Psychologist that the figures are more even than we would really like to believe. Men tend to hide depression and anxiety a lot better than women. They pretend if it does not show and they don’t talk about it, or go to see anyone about it, they don’t, or they are immuned to get it. Hence they often suffer in silence. (About five years ago my friend’s daughter found her father hanging in the garage dead) They had no idea that Darren had depression. Unfortunately the guys will hide it behind a few to many beers or spending way too much time in the shed fixing the car, or even gambling their hard earned dollars away, anything to avoid the truth that they may be suffering severe depression or anxiety. Quite often these outlets will have disastrous effects on every one involved.

Please note I am NOT giving the guys a roasting here I am just stating the facts as I see them.

The unfortunate thing here is these poor fellows that suffer depression and anxiety in silence are more

prone to leaving getting help until its all way too late.

Usually they won’t seek help until they have suffered considerable loss and trust of their loved ones around them. Even to the point of losing their partners and children. It’s a sad situation that in today’s society that we are guilty of forcing men to be TOUGH so this means that they feel that they don’t need to get medical help or diagnosis until it’s really too late.

Many men will feel self-conscious about going to see a therapist for help because they feel that others will find out and it will show that they are weak, so with this in mind these poor fellows have avoided seeking the help that may have needed for years.

“Male depression is a serious medical condition, but many men try to ignore it or refuse treatment. See what’s behind this so that you can move toward healthy changes”. The Mayo Clinic Staff.

These are some of the symptoms: irritability, isolated withdrawn, overworking, drinking to much, taking illicit drugs, thrill seeking with a devil may care attitude, violence and abuse, aggressive behaviour and the list can go on. Also they will tend to operate out of their “normal character” Frequent thoughts of suicide of a violent nature. Risky behaviour and this includes extreme driving of a reckless nature, dangerous sexual acts, sex outside of the relationship.

More often than not these symptoms will go unnoticed which does make the diagnosis more difficult. Also women are more likely to say that they are feeling down, sad or anxious where men usually won’t. So this will also make treating the depression and anxiety disorder even harder. Even though women attempt suicide more than men, the men are more likely to follow it through, usually violently eg: with guns or hanging themselves or even throwing themselves off a cliff, or smashing there car into something at extremely high speed.

Men also will act faster on their own thoughts of death than a woman.

People we need to reach out as much as we can because these men need more consideration then what we realise. For those men that are reading this please try and get some outside help. If you can find a friend to talk to or a family member, or even a local minister. Contact your local doctor, phone a crisis help line.
